Age and Gender

Cases of gout are more common in men, mainly because women have low levels of uric acid. However, after menopause, the uric acid level of women becomes similar to that of men. Men are usually more likely to develop gout between the ages of 30 and 50, while women develop these symptoms and signs after menopause.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy done to eliminate cancer can also cause gout, because the cancer cells destroyed by it make a lot of uric acid and this becomes the cause of gout.

Diet

Generally high purine diet leads to higher concentration of uric acid in blood.

Genetics do not seem to play a significant role in this condition, although the disease has been seen to run in families.

Hormones

Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an imbalance in the hormone estrogen. Therefore, the condition is more common in women than in men.
